Congress Lok Sabha Whip Manickam Tagore has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressing concern over the shortage of small currency notes.
He said that there is a shortage of small notes in the market due to which the poor are facing a lot of problems. Tagore said that the rural and urban poor are facing problems due to the shortage of 10, 20 and 50 rupee notes.
“Reports have indicated that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stopped printing these notes to promote UPI and cashless transactions,” Tagore wrote in his letter on Saturday.
It is understandable to promote digital payments, but this is affecting those who do not use digital payments yet. Especially people in rural India are facing problems.
He said that this decision also violates the fundamental right to obtain currency. Small businesses are also being affected due to shortage of small notes.
Daily wage labourers and street vendors are dependent on cash. He asked the Finance Minister to instruct the RBI to start printing small notes. Apart from this, attention should also be paid to digital payment infrastructure in villages.
Let us tell you that paper notes are printed at four places in the country. The Department of Currency Management prints notes on the instructions of RBI.
Of the currency note presses, two are owned by the Government of India and two by the Reserve Bank. India-owned note presses are located at Nasik and Dewas. Apart from this, the presses at Mysore and Salboni are owned by the Reserve Bank of India.
