4 Why did the judges hold a press conference? PM Modi and Kharge face to face on allegations of intimidation…

Congress has termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on a group of lawyers writing a letter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the “height of hypocrisy”.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that during the last 10 years of Narendra Modi’s rule, work has been done to distort things, divert attention and defame people.

The main opposition party also said that the Supreme Court has given them many setbacks in recent weeks and the electoral bond scheme is an example of this.

After senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra and some other lawyers wrote a letter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud accusing him of putting pressure on the judiciary and trying to defame the courts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Thursday targeted the Congress and claimed that bullying and intimidating ‘others’ has been the ‘old culture’ of the opposition party.

In a letter to the Chief Justice, the lawyers have alleged that a ‘vested interest group’ is trying to put pressure on the judiciary and defame the courts on the basis of useless arguments and a sordid political agenda.

In his response to this, the Prime Minister attacked the country’s oldest party Congress and said, “The Congress culture of threatening and intimidating others is old.”

Hitting back at the PM’s statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge posted on ‘X’, “Narendra Modi ji, you are talking about the judiciary. You easily forget that the 4 senior most judges of the Supreme Court were forced to hold an unprecedented press conference and warn against “democracy being destroyed”. That happened under your rule.”

Kharge asked the Prime Minister, “If one of the judges was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by your government, then who wants a ‘committed judiciary’?” You have forgotten that your party has fielded a former High Court judge in West Bengal for the current Lok Sabha elections. Why was he given this candidature?” Kharge asked the PM, “Who brought the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC)? Why did the Honorable Supreme Court stop it?

He alleged, “Modi ji, you are threatening one institution after another into surrender, so stop blaming the Congress party for your sins. You are an expert in the art of tampering with democracy and hurting the Constitution.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on The Supreme Court has dealt him several blows in recent weeks. The electoral bond scheme is an example of this.

“The Supreme Court declared electoral bonds unconstitutional and now it has been proved beyond doubt that it (bonds) is an instrument of intimidation, blackmail to force companies to donate to the BJP,” the Congress leader claimed. It was a powerful means of coercion and threat.

He alleged that instead of giving legal guarantee to MSP, the Prime Minister has given legal guarantee to corruption. Ramesh said, “In the last 10 years, the Prime Minister has only worked to divide, distort, divert attention and defame. 140 crore Indians are waiting for him to give a befitting reply soon.” He alleged in another post that the 10 years of Modi government have proved to be a ”death period” instead of ”amrit period”. Ramesh claimed that people are ready to overthrow this regime.
