A Ministry of External Affairs delegation led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told a parliamentary committee on Friday that around 30,000 Indian citizens are estimated to be in Israel now.
Sources gave this information. According to sources, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs was told that about 9,000 construction workers and 700 agricultural workers have gone there under an agreement signed between the two countries before the conflict started in West Asia.
The ministry highlighted its efforts to help Indian citizens living there.
The ministry reiterated the stand expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that India wants the crisis to be resolved through dialogue.
Sources said that in the meeting of the Standing Committee chaired by Congress member Shashi Tharoor, some members also raised the issue of the recent agreement between India and China to resolve the border crisis in the Ladakh region and the sourness in India-Canada relations. The officials made brief comments on two issues at the meeting.
Tharoor later said it was a “very good discussion”. According to sources, the ministry said the India-China agreement will restore the situation before the border crisis in 2020.
He said an opposition MP asked whether India had shown inclination towards Israel in this conflict.
The delegation, in its presentation before the parliamentary committee, detailed India’s humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian authorities and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to help Palestinian refugees.
Misri talked about India’s relations with Israel as well as Palestine. The delegation, in its presentation, said that Prime Minister Modi condemned the targeting of Israeli civilians by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and also expressed concern over the civilian casualties in a hospital in Palestine.
The Committee was told by the Ministry’s delegation that after the war, India evacuated more than 1,300 Indian citizens and some Nepali citizens from Israel under ‘Operation Ajay’.
