Officials of the central investigation agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating the ration scam in West Bengal and are continuously conducting raids.
In this connection, the ED team had reached Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas district on Friday.
The ED officers were accompanied by Central Security Force personnel, but before the team could take any action, a mob of 200 people surrounded them and attacked them.
Many people got injured in this. Vehicles of ED officers and security forces were also vandalized.
People call him the uncrowned king
Sandeshkhali village where all this happened is the village of Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan.
This village comes under North 24 Parganas district which is adjacent to the border of Bangladesh. Sheikh Shahjahan is an influential person of Sandeshkhali area. Local people call him the uncrowned king.
He is a member of the Zilla Parishad from this area and is close to many big leaders.

Shahjahan was born in a very poor family. His childhood was spent in poverty but gradually he came in contact with big leaders and became a major force in Sandeshkhali.
His political journey began in 2006 during the Left regime, when he started his career as a close aide of CPI(M) leader Moslem Shaikh.
Shahjahan used to collect money for the Sheikh. After this he gradually started investing money in real estate and fish farming.
Jyotipriyo Mallik’s special man
In 2011, when there was a change of government in the state, Shahjahan remained associated with the Left parties but in 2013, he joined the Trinamool Congress.
Since then he has become a special man of former minister Jyotipriyo Mallick. In 2019, when three people were killed in a BJP-TMC clash, Shahjahan’s name was linked to that incident. However, she then said that she was being defamed.

Local residents say that Shahjahan has been involved in various illegal activities since 2006 but he has always kept himself close to powerful people, hence neither any major blame could be leveled against him nor any action was ever taken.
Sources alleged that Shahjahan has been rigging elections in the region, hence he remains a favorite face of politics.
Shahjahan has been close to former minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, who is now in ED custody in the ration scam case.
That is why ED officials had come to interrogate Shahjahan in the ration scam. Agency sources said the ration scam is a big crime and Shahjahan may be involved in it.
