Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, on Saturday targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while condemning the attack on sadhus in Purulia district.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Pujari also referred to previous attacks on religious processions in Bengal. He said that the Chief Minister “gets angry when she sees ‘saffron’ colour”.
The priest said, “Someone had given the name Mumtaz Khan to Mamata Banerjee. Ram Navami processions and other religious processions have also been attacked there.” He said, “When she (Mamata Banerjee) sees ‘saffron’ color she gets angry and that is why she carries out these attacks… These incidents of attacks are highly condemnable.”
A video of a group of sadhus being beaten by a mob in Purulia district is going viral. In this, Amit Malviya of BJP IT Cell claimed that the attackers were criminals associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress.
He said, “Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, terrorists like Shahjahan Sheikh get state protection and sadhus are being killed. Being a Hindu is a crime in West Bengal.”
Purulia Superintendent of Police (SP) Avijit Banerjee later said that 12 suspects have been arrested in the incident that took place near Gaurangdih.
According to the Superintendent of Police, Sadhu was traveling in a vehicle. During this time, he stopped near three girls who were going to the local Kali temple for worship and asked them something.
Elaborating on the incident, he said, “Due to language barrier, some misunderstandings occurred and the girls thought that the sadhu was following them.”
He said the situation worsened when local residents felt that the sadhu was threatening the girls. After this he took the sadhus to the Durga temple.
According to the police, the mob vandalized their vehicle and beat up the sadhus. SP Banerjee assured that “a case has been initiated on the complaint of a sadhu. “So far 12 people have been arrested and investigation is underway.”
