India’s dominance in Maldives too, Muizzu’s party lost the mayor’s election; It was very difficult to screw up…

The newly elected President of Maldives Mohammed Muizzu has found it difficult to mess with India.

In a shock to Maldivian President Muizzu, the pro-India opposition party ‘Maldivian Democratic Party’ (MDP) on Saturday won a landslide victory in the mayor’s election of the capital Male.

MDP candidate Adam Azim has been elected the new mayor of Male, a post held by Muizzu till recently. Muizzu had resigned from the post last year to contest the presidential elections.

Maldivian media has described Azim’s victory as a landslide victory. The MDP is led by pro-India former President Mohammad Solih, who lost the presidential election to pro-China leader Muizzu.

According to the report of Maldives online news portal ‘Sun’, Azim defeated Aishath Azima Shakoor of Muizzu led rival party ‘People’s National Congress’ (PNC).

The island nation’s relations with India have come under strain over derogatory comments made by three Maldivian ministers on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At present the situation between India and Maldives is becoming tense. Maldives has already embarrassed itself by criticizing India in the beginning of the year 2024.

Recently, PM Modi had visited Lakshadweep, due to which some ministers of Maldives had made lewd and racist comments against PM Modi.

The comments of Maldivian ministers against PM Modi led to protests in the world as well as in Maldives, after which the Maldivian government woke up from its slumber.

The newly elected Mohammed Muizzu government in Maldives took action against all three ministers and suspended them. However, this is not the first time that Maldives has raised its voice against India.

In fact, the current Muizzu government of Maldives has become so engrossed in the hospitality of China that it has forgotten the favors India has done to it.
