On the launch of Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi from Manipur, State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh asked whether this is the time to do politics by holding rallies.
Singh, who leads the BJP government in the northeastern state, also asked whether Gandhi had come to create chaos in the improving situation in Manipur.
Gandhi’s more than two-month-long journey from the eastern region of the country to the west will end in Mumbai in March after passing through 110 districts.
Responding to questions from reporters on the sidelines of a program in Imphal, the Chief Minister said, “Given the current situation in the state, is this the time to do politics by organizing a rally? This is the time to protect life and property and give solace.”
He alleged that this was actually ‘Break India’; It is a journey, not a Bharat Jodo journey. “The situation is getting better and we doubt whether he (Gandhi) has come to create chaos in it,” Singh said.
Whenever he comes there is a problem. This time Manipur is alert. If he comes, we will have to be alert so that he does not mess things up.
Gandhi had visited Manipur for two days in June last year, weeks after violence broke out in the state, and met the affected people living in relief camps in several districts.
However, due to fear of violence on the way, the police had stopped his convoy going from Imphal to Churachandpur, due to which there was chaos for several hours. Ultimately the Congress leader used a helicopter to reach Churachandpur.
More than 180 people have died so far in caste violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The clashes broke out for the first time on May 3 after a tribal solidarity march was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meitei people constitute about 53 per cent of the population in Manipur and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while the tribals – Naga and Kuki communities – form 40 per cent and live in the hill districts.
