76th Army Day Parade today in Lucknow, know what is special this year…

The Indian Army is going to celebrate the 76th Army Day today with a grand parade in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

The Army Day Parade is being organized outside Delhi for the second consecutive year. Last year, the parade was held in Bengaluru.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandi Ben Patel will attend the event to be held today at the Parade Ground in Lucknow as chief guests.

Why is Army Day celebrated?,

Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January. On this day General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa took over command of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Roy Butcher in 1949.

He also became the first Indian to command the army in its long and rich history. General Sir Francis Roy Butcher was the last British to hold the post of Commander in Chief of the Indian Army.

Field Marshal KM Cariappa, popularly known as ‘The Kipper’. He received a King’s Commission in 1919 and was part of the first group of Indian cadets at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, UK.

Field Marshal Cariappa was the first Indian to join the Staff College, Quetta and the first Indian to command a battalion.

In 1942 he raised the 7th Rajput Machine Gun Battalion, later known as the 17th Rajput Battalion. In 1986, KM Cariappa was awarded the rank of Field Marshal. He died in 1993 at the age of 94.

From 1949 to 2022, the Army Day Parade was held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. The Chief of the Army Staff reviews the marching contingents, which also participate in the Republic Day parade every year.

This year the parade will be organized under the ‘Central Command’ of the Army, which is headquartered in Lucknow. Central Command is one of the seven operational commands of the Indian Army. Last year, the responsibility of the parade in Bengaluru was with the Southern Command.

A grand sight will be seen during the parade in Lucknow

A grand event will be held at the parade ground of 11 Gorkha Rifles Regimental Center in Lucknow under the command of Major General Salil Seth. Six marching contingents and military bands from various regiments of the Army will participate in it.

The 50th (Independent) Parachute Brigade, Sikh Light Infantry, Jat Regiment, Garhwal Rifles, Bengal Engineer Group and Army Air Defense contingent marched in the parade ground.

There are five regimental brass/military bands – Punjab Regiment Centre, Grenadier Regimental Centre, Bihar Regiment Centre, Sikh Light Regiment Centre, Kumaon Regimental Center and Sikh Regimental Centre.

The five regimental pipe bands are Sikh Regiment Centre, Sikh Lee Regiment Centre, Jat Regiment Centre, Kumaon Regimental Centre, and 1 Signal Training Centre.

Army Chief General Manoj Pandey will review the parade and present gallantry awards, followed by a daring motorcycle display by the Army Service Corps (ASC) Tornado, skydiving display by paratroopers, daring jumps and a flypast by Army Aviation Corps helicopters.

This year’s Army Day Parade will be very special as Artificial Intelligence will be used to select the ‘Best Marching Contingent’. “For the first time, Artificial Intelligence is being used to identify the best marching squad,” Major General Salil Seth said.

He said, “All marching teams practice, but there is a pattern to it – raising the arms and legs to a certain level and making movements with the weapons within a certain time frame.

We will capture every activity on camera and then computer software using AI will give points. This will be monitored. We have done two to three practices.”
