Messing with India is becoming costly for the President of Maldives.
Firstly, there was a decline in Indian tourists visiting Maldives. After this, he has to face opposition from the opposition in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the opposition leader has asked Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu to apologize to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Maldives Jamhooree Party leader Kasim Ibrahim said that Muizzu should apologize to India for the statements he had made after returning from the China trip.
ANI has given this news quoting a local media house.
According to Maldivian radio station, Voice of Maldives, Qasim Ibrahim has warned that if Muizzu does not do so, relations between the two countries may deteriorate.
He said that whatever be the country, especially when it is our neighbour, we should avoid such things which can spoil the relations.
He said that we have a responsibility towards our state which should be considered.
When Solih was the President, he fulfilled this responsibility very well. He also banned the India Out campaign. Now Yameen is raising questions as to why Muizzu, who participated with him in the India Out campaign, did not cancel the President’s order.
The leader of Maldives said that this order should not be cancelled. If this happens, only the country will suffer loss. He said that I will tell Muizzu that this should not be done.
Also, I call on President Muizzu to formally apologize to the Government of India and Prime Minister Modi for his remarks after his visit to China.
Last year, former Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih signed a decree stating that the opposition’s ‘India Out’ campaign was a threat to national security.
This allowed the security agencies to remove the banner of this campaign.
