Shocking reports have emerged regarding traffic jams on roads in India.
Every day, hours long traffic jams are seen on the roads in Delhi and Mumbai. But in this report two cities are ahead of Delhi and Mumbai.
These cities are Bengaluru and Pune. Last year, commuters in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru spent an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to travel 10 kilometres.
Whereas in Pune it took 27 minutes and 50 seconds for 10 kilometers. In this matter, the national capital Delhi is at number three. It took 21 minutes and 40 seconds to travel 10 kilometers in New Delhi.
Mumbai is at fourth place where it took an average of 20 minutes and 20 seconds to cover a distance of 10 kilometers.
Where are Pune and Bengaluru globally?
TomTom Index, a Netherlands-based multinational developer of location technology, gave this information in its report. According to the report, Pune and Bengaluru were among the top 10 most congested cities in the world in 2023.
If we talk about the whole world, Bengaluru is at sixth place and Pune is at seventh place. However, in this matter New Delhi is at 44th position and Mumbai is at 54th position. In 2022, the average time taken to travel 10 kilometers in Bengaluru was 29 minutes and 10 seconds.
Bengaluru was ranked second globally in 2022. New Delhi was ranked 34th with a timing of 22 minutes and 10 seconds, while Mumbai was ranked 47th with a timing of 21 minutes and 10 seconds.
TomTom’s report for 2023 shows that a commuter in Pune spent an average of 256 hours driving during peak hours.
Out of this, 128 hours were wasted only due to traffic jams. Not only was time wasted, but it also emitted approximately 1007 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Out of 1007 kg CO2, 265 kg was emitted only due to traffic jam. The average speed recorded during rush hour in Pune in 2023 was 19 kmph, the report said.
Where is the most traffic in the world?
It said that during peak hours, commuters spent 191 hours driving in New Delhi, 198 hours in Mumbai and 257 hours in Bengaluru. During this period, people in these cities wasted many hours due to traffic jams. 81 hours were lost in Delhi, 92 hours in Mumbai and 132 hours in Bengaluru due to traffic jams.
A study conducted in 387 cities of 55 countries revealed that London (England) is the city with the most traffic jams in the world.
Commuters spent an average of 37 minutes and 20 seconds traveling 10 kilometers in London. It is followed by Dublin (Ireland) with 29 minutes and 30 seconds and Toronto (Canada) with 29 minutes.
The report said that the traffic situation in cities has worsened in the last few years. However, the reason behind this has been attributed to the ongoing development work in those cities.
Experts have suggested promoting public transport and implementing parking policies to reduce traffic jams.
