Russia’s space agency Roscosmos has announced plans to work with China to build an automatic nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2035.
The proposed reactor will help power the lunar base which will be jointly operated by the two countries.
Almost three years ago in 2021, Roscosmos and the China Space Agency (CNSA) revealed that they intended to build a base on the Moon, named the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which they claimed at the time That it would be “open to all countries.”
However, NASA astronauts are unlikely to be allowed to visit this base due to poor relations with China and Russia. Because after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022, America had imposed a series of sanctions on Russia.
“Today we, together with our Chinese colleagues, are seriously considering a project to install a power unit on the lunar surface, possibly in 2033-2035,” Roscosmos Director General Yuri Borisov told Russian state media TASS. By then it will be completed.”
Borisov said that the biggest challenge in this mission will be to operate the reactor without the presence of humans. However, the technical solutions needed to accomplish this are “almost ready.”
