US President Joe Biden has won the Democratic primary election.
Former President Donald Trump also won the Republican primary election. With this, both have taken steps towards presidential candidature from their respective parties.
President Biden (81) easily won the party’s primary election in Georgia and has now become the party’s probable candidate for the presidential election.
Biden has received the support of more than half of the total 3,933 delegates (party members representing voters). To become the Democratic nominee, support of 1,968 delegates is required.
Tuesday’s results have cleared the way for the 2024 general election campaign. Now only less than eight months are left. It would be the longest-running campaign in modern American history.
Moreover, this will be the country’s first presidential election in 68 years when two candidates will once again face off.
The last time such a coincidence occurred in a presidential contest was in 1956, when Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower defeated his Democratic opponent Adlai Stevenson. He also defeated Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 elections.
Biden will be formally declared the party’s candidate during the ‘Democratic National Convention’ in Chicago in August. Trump (77) has so far received the support of 1,215 delegates. Trump will be officially declared the candidate at the ‘Republican National Convention’ in July.
Trump will be the Republican Party candidate in the presidential election for the third consecutive time.
Like last time, this time too the contest between the two was long awaited, although this time Trump will contest the elections facing different cases.
Trump will become the first former US president to face a criminal trial in New York on March 25. In this case, Trump is accused of wrongly manipulating records to hide secret payments made to ‘porn stars’.
Vice President Kamala Harris expressed happiness over Biden becoming the candidate of her party. At the same time, Biden issued a statement expressing happiness over the victory and candidature and termed Trump as a threat to democracy. Biden said Trump was “waging a campaign of outrage, retaliation that threatens the core idea of America.”
On Tuesday, on the eve of the primary elections, Trump had admitted that Biden would be the Democratic Party candidate before him.
After winning the Republican primary, Trump’s campaign department posted a video of him on ‘X’. “This is a big victory,” Trump said in the video. Now we have to get back to work because we have the worst president in the history of the country. “His name is Joe Biden, sometimes called Crooked Joe Biden, and he must be defeated.”
