Kolkata. A 28 kg turtle got trapped in a fishing net in the Kansai river in the Nazarganj area of Medinipur city. With the help of environmentalists, it was given first aid and handed over to the forest department. When fisherman Mohammad Naziruddin pulled his net out of the river while fishing, he realized that a big fish was trapped. When he pulled the net to the shore, he saw a huge turtle. Its weight was about 28 kg.
The forest department released the turtle at a safe place after giving it first aid. The turtle species was reported to be one of the deep-water turtles, whose average age can be 100 to 150 years. The forest department has thanked Debraj Chakraborty, Mohammad Naziruddin and all the colleagues for their important work. The news spread rapidly throughout the area and a crowd of local people started gathering to see the turtle. Meanwhile, Medinipur resident and wildlife lover Debraj Chakraborty, also known as ‘Sarpabandhu’, was informed about the incident. Debraj immediately reached the spot and carried out the rescue operation by safely removing the turtle. Later, Debraj and his friends handed over this turtle to the forest workers of Rupnarayan division.
