Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed the need to revise Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy.
During a televised meeting on Wednesday, Putin mentioned possible changes in the country’s nuclear policy, although he did not give any specific details.
“We are seeing that the modern military and political situation is changing rapidly and we must take this into account. This includes the emergence of new military threats and risks for Russia and our allies,” he said in his statement.
This change clarifying the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons comes after Putin’s warning to the US and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies.
The warning said that allowing Ukraine to use weapons supplied by Western countries to attack Russia would mean going to war between Russia and NATO.
Current doctrine states that Moscow can use its nuclear warheads “in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons against itself and its allies, as well as conventional weapons in the event of a threatened aggression against the Russian Federation.”
He said the revised version of the document elaborates more on the conditions for use of nuclear weapons, saying they could be used in the event of a massive air strike by aircraft, cruise missiles or drones.
This statement of the Russian President is important from the point of view of international security and strategic balance.
At a time when tensions between Western powers and Russia are at their peak, Putin’s indication shows that there could be some major changes in Russia’s policy.
Putin did not say directly what steps these changes would take, but made clear that strategic defense needs to be updated to meet new challenges.
