At the same time, he also played a big role in power. Born in Madhubani, Bihar, Dhirendra Brahmachari was also the yoga guru of former Prime Ministers Pandit Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
He was so close to Indira Gandhi that he used to teach her yoga in a closed room. Indira Gandhi’s biographer Katherine Frank also mentioned her in her book.
Dhirendra Brahmachari’s Asham was not only given a grant from the Ministry of Education but was also allotted a luxurious bungalow by the Ministry.
It is said that Dhirendra left home at the age of 13. After this he started learning yoga at Maharishi Kartikeya Ashram in Gopalkheda, Lucknow.
After this he started appearing in the political circles of Delhi. His political influence was so much that at that time he had a four seater private jet, 19 seater Darnier and Mall – 5 aircraft.
He himself was a trained pilot and flew his own planes. It is said that his influence was so much that he could get any bureaucrat transferred at any time.
Former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral has also mentioned Dhirendra Brahmachari in his autobiography ‘Matters of Discretion’. He told that when he was a Minister of State, Dhirendra Brahmachari had also threatened him with getting demoted.
When he did not listen to them, the same thing actually happened to him and in the cabinet reshuffle, another minister was appointed over him. When Gujarat complained against him to Indira Gandhi, she remained silent.
Dhirendra Brahmachari was born on 12 February 1924 in Madhubani district of Bihar. He reached Delhi in 1958. His first meeting with Indira Gandhi took place in Kashmir.
After this he became the yoga guru of Indira Gandhi. Apart from him, Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai and Dr. Rajendra Prasad also became his yoga disciples. Vishvayatan Yoga Ashram in Delhi was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Nehru.
Dhirendra Brahmachari was mostly seen wearing a dhoti. According to Natwar Singh, who was close to Indira Gandhi, her yoga program used to air on television on Wednesdays.
He lived there as a member of the Gandhi family. Due to his closeness to Indira Gandhi, he also came to be known as Rasputin.
However, people close to Indira Gandhi called it a rumor. During the Emergency, he became closer to Indira Gandhi. His wealth also continued to increase. He also lived close to Sanjay Gandhi.
After Indira Gandhi’s Vapi in 1980, he was seen more with her. He lived close to Sanjay Gandhi. After the death of Sanjay Gandhi in the plane crash, he had said that Sanjay Gandhi should not have shown so much acrobatics.
Ramachandra Guha has written in his book ‘India After Gandhi’ that with the support of Sanjay Gandhi, he remained as the yoga guru of the Gandhi family for a long time.
Like Sanjay Gandhi, Dhirendra was also fond of flying planes. It is said that after the death of Sanjay Gandhi, the influence of Dhirendra Brahmachari also started decreasing.
Rajiv Gandhi and his ideas did not match. His program on Doordarshan was also suddenly stopped. Even his entry into the Prime Minister’s residence was banned.
Even during the funeral of Indira Gandhi, Dhirendra Brahmachari was sent away.
A few days later, Dhirendra Brahmachari died in a plane crash.
His pilot advised him not to fly because the weather was bad. However he did not listen. His plane was later found crashed in the bushes.
