After enmity with India, Maldives was yearning for every drop, when it pleaded in front of China, it got relief…

The actions of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, who has messed up with India, are taking a heavy toll on the people of his country day by day.

After 2014, a major water crisis has deepened again in Maldives.

The people of Maldives are craving every drop of water. However, in 2014, India became a trouble-shooter and provided water to Maldives by running Operation Neer.

This time, to save itself from the water crisis, Maldives sought help from China and not India. On the pleading of the Muizzu government which had taken refuge in China, Jinping opened the doors of relief. The Chinese government has donated 1500 tons of potable water to Maldives.

This water was stored in China from the glaciers of Tibet.

To overcome the acute water shortage in Maldives, China’s Xi Jinping government has donated 1500 tonnes of drinking water obtained from glaciers in Tibet.

The donation comes as part of China’s ongoing support to the Maldives. After assuming the office of the President of Maldives in November 2023, Maldives had taken steps towards friendship with China after breaking up with India.

Maldives Foreign Ministry informed on Tuesday that the consignment of drinking water has successfully reached it.

According to Maldives, this decision of China is the result of discussions during the visit of Chinese representative and President Yan Jinhai in Tibet to Male. At that time, there was a call for help from Maldives in the water crisis.

Muijju has asked for help from China thrice
This is not the first case of China’s help to Maldives. At the beginning of the year, when Indians started boycotting going to Maldives after the objectionable remarks made on Indian PM Narendra Modi, tourism-dependent Maldives had to ask for help from China.

Maldives had demanded the Chinese government to ask its people to visit Maldives. In March this year, Maldives had signed a military agreement with China. In which the Chinese army will provide training in military equipment to Maldives.

When India launched Operation Neer in Maldives
Most of the Maldives are made up of coral reefs and sand reefs. Surrounded by salt water, the Maldives often faces extreme groundwater and freshwater shortages due to climate change.

In December 2014, the Maldives faced a severe water crisis after a massive fire broke out at the Malé Water and Sewerage Company premises. Then India had launched ‘Operation Neer’ in Maldives.

Indian aircraft delivered 375 tonnes of drinking water, two Indian ships, INS Deepak and INS Shukanya, delivered about 2,000 tonnes of water. This brought great relief to the people of Maldives.
