Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has broken her silence for the first time after leaving the country.
He has said that all the martyrs of the country, including my father, have been insulted. Hasina’s son Sajeeb has shared the former PM’s statement in his social media post.
In this statement, Hasina addressed the Bangladeshi people and said that I appeal to all of you to celebrate August 15 as National Mourning Day with seriousness and dignity.
Offer floral wreaths and prayers at Bangabandhu Bhaban and pray for the salvation of all the souls who were martyred for the independence of Bangladesh.
Condemning the destruction of the museum of the founder of Bangladesh and her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former PM Hasina said that our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership we achieved recognition as an independent country.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was respected all over the world, was insulted in this protest. They have insulted lakhs of martyrs who died in the freedom movement. I want justice from my countrymen.
Sheikh Hasina said that since last July, there has been only vandalism, violence and arson in the name of the movement, in which many people have lost their lives.
Teachers, students, police personnel, police women, journalists, social workers, common people, Awami League workers, whoever got killed due to this terrorist attack, I express my condolences and pray for all of them.
Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year-long reign as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh ended on August 5. She had to resign and leave her country due to the ongoing violent protests against her rule.
On August 5, she sought permission from the Indian government to come to India, which was accepted by the government and Sheikh Hasina came to India. Sheikh Hasina has been in India since then.
In the violent protests in Bangladesh, people of Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League, have been selectively targeted. Their houses, hotels and shops were burnt down.
The League leaders were beaten to death. Many people were burnt alive. Along with this, attacks on minority Hindus also intensified, after which thousands of people gathered near the Indian border. The Indian Border Security Forces pacified them and sent them back to Bangladesh.
Recently, a court in Bangladesh has registered a murder case against the former PM and people of his administration and started investigation in the matter of killing of a person by the police during the protests.
After Sheikh Hasina left power in Bangladesh, an interim government has been formed with the support of the army, which is led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. Two protesting student leaders are also included in this government.
