The troubles of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is fighting with many countries including Gaza and Iran, have increased.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu. This may cause problems during his trips abroad.
There are many countries where if Netanyahu goes, he may even be arrested. Most of these are countries which are against Israel in its ongoing war.
Italy has said after the ICC order that it will be bound to follow the court’s rules and arrest Netanyahu. Many other countries of the European Union have also adopted a similar stance.
Italy, a member of the International Criminal Court, has stated its legal obligation to comply with the arrest warrant. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto acknowledged that Italy would have to arrest Netanyahu if he entered Italian territory.
However, Crosetto also said that the ICC’s approach of placing Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant on the same level as Hamas is inappropriate.
France, meanwhile, adopted a cautious tone and showed respect for the ICC’s independent work, but did not confirm whether it would arrest Netanyahu.
If Netanyahu travels to Turkey, it may be difficult for him. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the ICC arrest warrant is a promising and important step towards bringing to justice Israeli officials who commit genocide against Palestinians.
“We will continue to work to ensure that international law is implemented to punish genocide,” Fidan said. At the same time, Britain said that it respects the independence of the ICC.
At the same time, French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine said in a statement, “France takes note of this decision. “In line with its commitment to support international justice, it reiterates its commitment to the independent work of the Court in accordance with the Rome Treaty.”
Lemoine described the ICC warrant as a procedural formality rather than a final decision. On the other hand, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban openly rejected the court’s decision and termed it wrong. Offered a guarantee of safe travel to Netanyahu should he come to Hungary.
Slovenia said it will fully comply with the court’s arrest warrant. Prime Minister Robert Golob reaffirmed Slovenia’s intention to uphold international justice while strengthening its support for Palestine.
At the same time, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that implementing ICC decisions is a legal obligation rather than a political option.
Meanwhile, non-EU countries such as the US criticized the ICC. US President Joe Biden described the warrant as insulting and emphasized unwavering support for Israel.
