We hear a lot about women’s biological clock and how age affects the chances of conceiving.
New research shows that men’s fertility is also affected by age. In simple words, men can also become fathers till a certain age limit.
If a man is over 50, his wife’s chances of conceiving are very low, or the woman may face dangerous complications upon pregnancy.
A survey has been conducted in America regarding this. Data of more than 4 crore 60 lakh births was studied. In this, a 30 year old father was compared with a 50 year old father.
“After taking into account the mother’s age and other factors that affect pregnancy outcomes, we found that every ten-year increase in parental age was associated with more complications,” said study researcher Karin Hammarberg at Monash University in Wellington. The researchers found that if a father was in his 50s, his chances of becoming a father decreased.
Research also found out
In the study, the average age of all men increased from 30.8 years in 2011 to 32.1 years in 2022. Over the same period, the proportion of men 50 years of age or older who had children increased from 1.1% to 1.3%.
Researchers say we don’t know the proportion of men over 50 who father children in Australia
child bearing age in men
According to research, the average age of Australian fathers was 28.6 years in 1975. It increased to 33.7 years in 2022. How does a man’s age affect his wife’s pregnancy? On this, the researchers say that as we hear from media reports of celebrity fathers, men produce sperm from youth and can have children till old age.
However, from the age of about 40, the quality of sperm declines significantly. This results in older men having a diminished or steadily decreasing chance of becoming a father. In other words, it can also be said that it takes longer for the wife to conceive.
A study of the effect of the man’s age on timing of conception showed that women with a male partner 45 or older were nearly five times more likely to take longer than a year to conceive than women with a partner 25 or younger.
More than three-quarters (76.8%) of men under 25 years of age had their female partners pregnant within six months, while only more than half (52.9%) of men over 45 years of age were able to get their women pregnant.
The risk of miscarriage in women due to the older age of men
Data collected from ten studies showed that partners of older men are also more likely to experience a miscarriage. Fathers over the age of 45 have a 43% increased risk of miscarriage, compared to couples where the man was 25 to 29 years old.
A review of studies in couples using assisted reproductive technologies found that parents with men under the age of 40 reduced the risk of miscarriage by about 25% compared to couples with men under the age of 40.
Being a man under the age of 40 also nearly doubled the chance of a live birth per treatment cycle. In a man over 40, 17.6% of treatment cycles resulted in a live birth, compared to 28.4% when the man was under 40.
This kind of lifestyle is also dangerous
There are many lifestyle factors that increase the risk of pregnancy complications and reduce fertility that can be addressed.
They include: smoking, recreational drug taking, anabolic steroid use, and excess alcohol consumption.
