Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a major success during his US visit.

297 rare items related to Indian culture have been returned to America, which had been smuggled out of the country.

Theft and smuggling of precious and antiques has long been a serious problem. Since 2014, India has recovered about 640 heritages from abroad.

Prime Minister Modi has expressed his gratitude to President Biden by posting on the social media platform X. He said that the fight against illegal trafficking and cultural relations are getting stronger.

We are grateful to President Joe Biden and the US government for returning 297 precious artefacts.

Earlier also, many ancient items were handed over during PM Modi’s visit to America. When PM Modi visited America in 2021, he received 157 items.

This also included the 12th century statue of Nataraja. After PM Modi’s visit in 2023, America returned 105 items to India. In this way, till now 578 ancient and priceless items have been returned to India from America alone.

Apart from America, 16 artifacts have been retrieved from the UK and 14 from Australia. Whereas from 2004 to 2013, India was able to get only one artifact from abroad.

The Cultural Property Agreement was signed between the US and India in New Delhi on the sidelines of the 46th World Heritage Committee in July 2024. According to this agreement, efforts will be made to stop the illegal smuggling of cultural items.

For the last 10 years, India has made meaningful efforts to get back its ancient ‘treasure’ and its effect is visible.

Sources say that Prime Minister Modi’s personal relations with global leaders have helped in bringing back India’s heritage. The artifacts and statues that reached abroad through smuggling are related to India’s ancient culture.
