Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan on Tuesday.
This is the first meeting between Pejeshkian and Modi, who became President after winning the elections in July.
This meeting took place during the ongoing 16th BRICS summit in Kazan city of Russia. After this meeting, Iranian President Pejeshkian described it as “good”.
India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were also present in the meeting. This meeting is taking place at a time when tension between Iran and Israel is increasing.
Especially after the death of top leaders of Hezbollah and Hamas, the situation in the Middle East is even more tense.
There are ancient civilizational relations between India and Iran. Iran lies in India’s extended neighborhood and there is significant synergy between the two countries in the economic and security sectors.
India and Iran are important trade partners. In January 2024, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Iran, his first visit after Iran joined BRICS in September 2023.
This meeting at the BRICS summit is being seen as an important step towards further deepening relations between the two countries.
BRICS initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but now also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied to become members and some other countries have also shown interest in joining.
