Folk singer Sharda Sinha died on Tuesday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after a prolonged illness. She was 72 years old. She was admitted in AIIMS for the last 11 days.
Sharda Sinha was fighting a battle with cancer but was heartbroken after the death of her husband Brajkishore Sinha.
Sharda Sinha, awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, is known for Bhojpuri and Maithili folk songs, ghazals, film songs and her melodious voice.
The wedding songs and Chhath songs sung by him have been popular and popular in Bihar and other states as well.
Because of her sweet voice, she was called Swara Kokila of Bihar and Begum Akhtar of Mithila. She was also nicknamed Lata Mangeshkar of Bihar.
Apart from Maithili, Bajjika, Bhojpuri, he also sang Hindi songs. He also lent his melodious voice in many Hindi films.
For his contribution to the world of music, the Government of India honored him with Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2018.
The melodious songs sung by Sharda Sinha in a melodious voice on the occasion of Chhath festival resonate in all parts of the country including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. His demise has caused an irreparable loss in the field of music.
When did you sing the first song
In an interview, Sharda Sinha had said that her initial education in music was in the family itself. He had told that he had sung the first song at his elder brother’s wedding on the occasion of Duar Chhekai.
His newly-wed sister-in-law also helped him in this and taught him how to sing the song of Duar Chhekai. This song was recorded by HMV.
That song was – Dooar ke chhekai mein pehle chukaiya o Dularua bhaiya, then jaiha kohwar apan, hey Dularua bhaiya…. Show your father-in-law’s earnings, give your sister’s money, dear brother, then show your earnings, oh dear brother.
Family members including mother-in-law had expressed their displeasure
Sharda Sinha had told that when she was studying in the village school, she had accompanied her father to the Durga Puja program, where she sang a song from the stage in public for the first time.
There was a big uproar over this. The villagers and family had criticized Sharda a lot at that time but her father supported her all the time and kept her away from the taunts and criticisms of the society.
He told that when he got married, his mother-in-law also opposed his singing and musical journey and did not eat food for three-four days in protest.
Whereas his father-in-law had inspired him to sing bhajans in the temple at his in-laws house.
Mother-in-law got angry on this also. According to Sharda Sinha, her first song was recorded in 1971. Sharda Sinha told that she had also learned Manipur dance.
