Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake, during his meeting with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, said that he will not allow Sri Lankan soil to be used for activities against India.
Both countries also agreed in the meeting with Jaishankar that security and defense interests are closely interlinked. Jaishankar is the first foreign minister to visit Sri Lanka since Dissanayake took charge.
The Indian government said, “Their cooperation is in mutual interest and has contributed to the stability and security of the region. The importance of continued dialogue promoting trust, transparency and mutual sensitivity was recognised.”
S Jaishankar invited Dissanayake to visit India on behalf of PM Narendra Modi. The Sri Lankan President said India’s economic support is vital to realizing his vision of a prosperous Sri Lanka and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
He mentioned the possibilities of exporting renewable energy to India, which could help in reducing production costs and creating additional resources in Sri Lanka. Dissanayake noted the contribution of Indian tourists and believed that there was potential for further growth.
Jaishankar assured that India’s ongoing development assistance to Sri Lanka will continue through priority projects.
He emphasized that India has offered to modernize Kankesanthurai Port through a grant of $61.5 million.
He said payments for seven completed line of credit projects worth $20 million could be converted into grants.
India has also decided to gift 22 diesel engines to Sri Lankan Railways. Jaishankar raised the fishermen and ethnic issues and reiterated India’s support to the aspirations of all communities, including Tamils, for equality, justice, respect, peace while maintaining the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
