Belching. A military base in the west of Chad was attacked by unknown assailants. 40 soldiers have died in the attack. The country’s President Mahamat Déby Itno visited the military base on Monday morning and announced the launch of a military operation to capture the attackers. Chad has long battled an insurgency in its west near the border with Nigeria. Earlier in June, nine people were killed and more than 40 were injured in a fire following an explosion at a military ammunition depot in the capital N’Djamena. The government blamed extremist Islamic organization Boko Haram for an attack in March this year in which seven soldiers were killed.
Operation begins to destroy extremist group bases
Chad’s military began a campaign to destroy the extremist group’s bases in 2020. After a few years of peace, the fear of violence has arisen again in Chad. Boko Haram began an insurgency against Western education in Chad more than a decade ago. This organization wants to establish Islamic law in the north-east of Nigeria. Till now the activities of this organization have spread to West Africa including Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
