United Nations. Bangladesh now seems to be troubled by the Rohingya Muslims. The number of Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh is more than 12 lakhs. In a recent meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, even offered to send the Rohingyas back. He claims that Bangladesh’s own development is at stake.
During a high-level meeting in New York, Yunus spoke about the challenges posed by the Rohingyas. He said, despite hosting the Rohingyas with compassion, densely populated Bangladesh is incurring huge costs in terms of social, economic and environmental… He said, it is clear that Bangladesh has reached its limit. In such a situation, as much as Bangladesh is involved in humanitarian aspects or ensuring justice, sending the Rohingyas back is the only solution to this crisis.
He said that in many resolutions including the United Nations General Assembly, it has been said to create such an environment in Myanmar in which Rohingya Muslims can return with respect and security. He said, it is sad that in the last 7 years there has been no discussion on the root cause of Myanmar’s crisis. Not even a single Rohingya has been able to return to his homeland.
He said, in such a situation, the forcibly displaced Rohingya, their hosts and global partners are facing uncertainties. While, their focus on humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya is weakening. The large number of youth population in the camp is potentially making the crisis more difficult. During this, Yunus also emphasized on the deteriorating security situation in the area. These include fighting and criminal activities.
