Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent for the Paralympic Games beginning in Paris on August 28.
He boosted the morale of Indian athletes on social media, saying that the best wishes of 140 crore Indians are with them and their courage and determination are a source of inspiration for the entire country.
In his post, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “140 crore Indians are wishing our contingent all the best at the Paris Paralympics 2024. The courage and determination of every athlete is a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Everyone is praying for their success.”
This time India is participating in the Paralympic Games with its largest team, which includes a total of 84 athletes. This team also includes 50 athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
Medal competitions for Indian athletes will begin on the very first day of the Games, i.e. on August 29. The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games will be held on August 28 in Paris.
Prime Minister Modi interacted with Indian Paralympians on 19 August through video conferencing.
In this interaction, he encouraged athletes like archer Sheetal Devi, shooter Avani Lekhara, high-jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, and javelin star Sumit Antil and hoped they would break records in Paris.
After a mixed performance at the Paris Olympics, India is hoping for a record-breaking performance from the Paralympic Games. India won 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, including five gold and eight silver medals.
India had won a total of 12 medals since its Paralympic debut in 1968 until the 2016 Rio Games but Tokyo changed the picture of India’s Paralympic success.
India is hoping to surpass the 25 medal mark and take its gold medal tally into double digits at the Paris Paralympics.
This Paralympics could be a historic moment for India and the whole country is currently looking forward to the talented athletes.
