Former Election Commissioner Arun Goel has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Croatia, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday. Goel is a retired bureaucrat.
Arun Goel has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
He is expected to take charge soon. Arun Goyal created a sensation by resigning in March just before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections 2024.
His tenure was till 5 December 2027. He was going to become the Chief Election Commissioner after Rajiv Kumar retired in February next year. But he surprised everyone with his sudden decision.
Congress had expressed concern over the resignation of Arun Goyal as Election Commissioner. It had said that if the attacks on independent institutions are not stopped, it will not take long for democracy to turn into dictatorship.
It is worth noting that there was a controversy over Arun Goyal’s appointment as Election Commissioner. A PIL was also filed in the Supreme Court regarding this.
It was said that the appointment of Arun Goyal was a violation of the independence and institutional purity of the Election Commission.
Let us tell you that Arun Goyal was appointed Election Commissioner in November 2022. He resigned from the post in March 2024.
Before his appointment as Election Commissioner, he served as a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Punjab cadre, after which he took VRS.
