A major upset was seen in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier on Tuesday 26 March.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier match was played between India and Afghanistan in Guwahati, in which the Indian football team had to face defeat.
Afghanistan team defeated the hosts 2-1. This is the second time in the history of football that the Afghanistan team has defeated India.
The Indian team’s only previous defeat against Afghanistan was in 2013.
After this, the Indian team ruled Afghanistan for almost a decade, but now in 2024, Afghanistan counterattacked and defeated India.
Even this was the 150th match of Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri, but he could not make it memorable and this match gave him the biggest sorrow.
Afghanistan football team has been successful in performing well in the last few matches against India. In 2024 itself, one match was a 0-0 draw, whereas in 2022, India defeated Afghanistan by a margin of 2-1.
Earlier in 2019, two matches were played between the two countries and both the matches ended in a 1-1 draw.
From this it can be inferred that Afghanistan has not defeated India in the last few matches, but has chewed up the iron gram.
Talking about the match, India had made a good start. Sunil Chhetri, playing his 150th match, gave India a 1-0 lead by scoring a goal in the 37th minute.
However, in the second half and in the 70th minute of the match, Rahmat Akbari scored a goal for Afghanistan and leveled the score. After this, in the 88th minute, another goal was scored by Afghanistan and the team got the lead. This time Sharif Muhammed scored the goal.
