BJP claimed on Friday that the India alliance is brainstorming to replace Rahul Gandhi with another leader for the post of leader of the opposition.
BJP has said that if the alliance feels that Rahul Gandhi is not performing well then they must make this change.
On Friday, BJP MP from New Delhi Lok Sabha seat Bansuri Swaraj said that there are many capable leaders within the opposition parties who can play the role of leader of the opposition.
However, he clarified that this decision should be taken by the alliance itself as it is an internal matter of India Bloc.
INDIA Alliance has not responded to BJP’s claim. According to experts, only the MP from the largest opposition party with at least 10 percent seats can be appointed as the Leader of Opposition.
Since Congress is the largest opposition party in the House, Rahul Gandhi has been appointed the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj made this comment when asked about the discussion among opposition parties about the possibility of making the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha rotational.
There are many such capable leaders in opposition parties – Bansuri Swaraj
“Yes, absolutely,” Bansuri Swaraj said at a press conference at the party headquarters. I have also heard that there is talk of making the post of Leader of Opposition rotational. But I would politely say that this is an internal matter of the opposition.” Bansuri Swaraj said that there are many capable leaders in the opposition. He said, “There are many leaders in the opposition parties who are quite capable of handling the charge of Leader of the Opposition. If Indie Alliance feels that Honorable Rahul Gandhi is not able to handle his duties with full dedication, then it is up to them to take this decision.”
Only the MP of the largest opposition party gets the post
However, former Lok Sabha General Secretary PDT Acharya has said that only the MP from the largest opposition party in the House can be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition.
He said that the largest opposition party specifically chooses the person it wants to appoint as the leader of the opposition.
“Neither the government nor the speaker has any role in this,” he told PTI.
Acharya further said that the Speaker recognizes a person as the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha only when his name is put forward by the largest opposition party.
