In the report, eyewitnesses said that there were more passengers on the boat than its capacity. The boat sank a few meters away from Kituku port. The incident occurred when the boat was traveling from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma in North Kivu province. Earlier in June also, 80 passengers lost their lives when a ferry sank near the capital Kinshasa. In January, 22 people died when a boat capsized in Lake Mai-Ndombe.
