India’s influence is continuously increasing in the world.
Politically, even big and powerful countries listen to India seriously. As a result, India has made a significant contribution in transferring the ownership of the Chagos Islands from the United Kingdom to Mauritius.
According to sources of news agency ANI, India during the talks had strongly and unwaveringly advocated the need to end the last vestiges of colonialism.
The joint statement issued by UK and Mauritius has also acknowledged India’s involvement in this matter.
“We have the full support and assistance of our close allies, the United States and India, in reaching today’s political agreement,” the statement said.
Let us tell you that the UK’s decision to hand over sovereignty of the remote islands to Mauritius ended the decades-long, often contentious negotiations between the two countries.
Sources said, “India played a quiet but important role in this. India strongly supported Mauritius’ principled stance. Supported its stance on the need to eradicate the last vestiges of colonialism. India consistently encouraged both countries to dialogue with an open mind and achieve mutually beneficial results.”
It is believed that the end result is a win-win for all parties and will strengthen long-term security in the Indian Ocean region. Soon after the announcement, India welcomed the historic agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius and said the resolution of the long-standing Chagos dispute is a welcome step.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Government of India said, “We welcome the agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius on the return to Mauritius of sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia. This important understanding completes the decolonization of Mauritius. “The resolution of the long-running Chagos dispute in compliance with international law after two years of negotiations is a welcome step forward.”
