The Taliban, who have committed atrocities against women in Afghanistan, will now face a case in the International Court.
In an unprecedented step, the governments of Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands have decided to take the Taliban to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for gender discrimination.
There is also support from 20 other countries for action against Taliban. This step taken in the United Nations General Assembly is the first time that a case is being filed by one country against another country in the International Court on the issue of gender discrimination.
The Taliban will get six months to respond before the hearing in the ICJ. On the other hand, the interim government of Afghanistan has rejected the allegations against itself.
In the year 2021, Taliban took power in the country by toppling the Afghan government. At present, the interim government of Taliban is running in Afghanistan under the leadership of Hibatullah Akhundzada. After taking power, the Taliban implemented Shia law in Afghanistan.
In this, Taliban imposed a series of restrictions on all the common people. The biggest impact was seen on women.
In the recently issued new rules on women, the Taliban implemented the order that no woman can leave the house without the man of the house.
Even the eyes of women should be covered. Apart from this, it is mandatory to keep beard in offices. There is a complete ban on listening to music, watching films and make-up.
Will drown by taking strict action from women
Strictness towards women in Afghanistan will sink the Taliban. There is a ban on women’s education after the sixth class. As a condition of sending young girls to school, there will be separate educational institutions for boys and girls. They have been excluded from public places and most jobs.
Australia, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands have prepared to initiate legal proceedings against the Taliban for violating the UN Women Convention.
Afghanistan is part of this treaty. These countries started this initiative on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. This session of the General Assembly will continue till Monday in New York.
You will get 6 months time
Taliban will be given 6 months time before the case starts in ICJ.
More than twenty countries expressed their support on Thursday for proposed legal action against the Taliban.
These countries said, “We condemn the large-scale and systematic human rights violations in Afghanistan, especially discrimination against women and girls.”
“Afghanistan is responsible under international law for its continued gross and systematic violations of multiple obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women,” she said.
Meanwhile, Taliban deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said that human rights are protected in Afghanistan and no one has to suffer discrimination.
“Unfortunately, an attempt is being made to spread propaganda against Afghanistan and misrepresent the situation through the mouths of (Afghan) women who have left the country,” he wrote on ‘X’.
Fitrat said that Afghanistan’s allegations of human rights violations and gender discrimination are completely wrong.
