Central government announced increase in minimum wage rates for workers

New Delhi . The central government has announced an increase in the minimum wage rates for workers. On Thursday, the Ministry of Labor and Employment issued a statement saying that the government has increased the minimum wage rates and revised the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). This decision will help the workers in the unorganized sector to cope with the rising inflation and cost of living.
The revised wage rates will benefit those workers who are engaged in works like construction, loading-unloading, janitorial, cleaning, housekeeping, mining and agriculture, and who come under the purview of the Central Government. This decision will improve the economic condition of workers in the unorganized sector and increase their income, which will provide them relief in dealing with the challenges of inflation.
The new wage rates will be applicable from October 1, 2024. Earlier, the wage rates were last changed in April 2024. The minimum wage of workers is fixed on the basis of their skill level and geographical area. According to skill level, laborers are divided into unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled categories, while geographical areas are divided into A, B and C categories.
After the amendment, the minimum wage rate for unskilled laborers in Sector A will be Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). This rate is Rs 868 per day for semi-skilled laborers (Rs 22,568 per month), Rs 954 per day for skilled laborers (Rs 24,804 per month), and Rs 1,035 per day for highly skilled laborers and armed guards (Rs 26,910 per month).
