Congress has demanded front row seats for its four MPs in the Lok Sabha.
These MPs include Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal, Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi and Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh.
This request has been sent to the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who will take the final decision on seat allocation.
Rahul Gandhi will get special seat
Rae Bareli MP and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has the right to a designated seat in the front row under the rules.
This seat will be right in front of the seat of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Congress has 99 MPs in the 18th Lok Sabha. Seeing this performance of the party, Congress is demanding three more front row seats.
SP and DMK also demanded seats
Samajwadi Party (SP), the third largest party in the Lok Sabha after BJP and Congress, may get two front row seats.
SP has demanded two front row seats for its president and floor leader Akhilesh Yadav and Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad. At the same time, DMK has demanded a front row seat for its senior MP TR Baalu.
Lok Sabha Speaker will take the final decision
“Most of the parties have sent the list of their preferred seats,” an official told HT on condition of anonymity.
The Speaker of the Lok Sabha will allot the seat division number to all the MPs.” Front row seats are meant for senior members and floor leaders and have a special status in the Lok Sabha.
It will be interesting to see what rules and conventions the Lok Sabha Speaker follows in the allotment of seats this time.
