Amidst speculations about break of opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh, talks between Congress and Samajwadi Party have been reached and both the parties have calculated the seats.
It is reported that out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, SP is going to contest on 63 and Congress on 17.
Now if we look at the figures of 2019, the Congress had lost its deposits on 12 out of 17 seats. Not only this, the party did not even contest on one of these seats.
These seats came to the account of Congress
Under the seat sharing formula decided in UP, Congress will contest elections from Amethi, Rae Bareli, Kanpur Nagar, Fatehpur Sikri, Basgaon, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Maharajganj, Amroha, Jhansi, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki, Deoria and Varanasi. The special thing is that Congress has lost its stronghold Amethi to Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019.
In 2019, deposits of Congress candidates were confiscated on more than 100 seats.
In the last Lok Sabha elections, Congress had fielded candidates on 421 seats. Of these, the party could win only 52 seats. Apart from this, deposits were confiscated on 148 seats of the party.
Whereas in UP, the party could register victory only in Rae Bareli. Smriti Irani, who contested on BJP ticket, defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi.

When SP and Congress came together before this
Earlier in UP, SP and Congress had come together in the year 2017 also. In the alliance formed in the assembly elections, SP had given more than 100 seats to Congress out of 403.
However, in the results, Congress could win only 7 seats. After this, in the assembly elections held in the year 2022, Congress was reduced to two assembly seats.
