New Delhi. In the case of appointment of aldermen in Delhi Municipal Corporation, the Lieutenant Governor has got a big relief from the Supreme Court and the Aam Aadmi Party government has got a setback. Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha and Justice Sanjay Kumar said in their decision that the Lieutenant Governor can appoint aldermen. The decision states that LG can appoint aldermen even without the advice of the Delhi Cabinet.
This decision means that LG is now free to nominate 10 aldermen in MCD. The Supreme Court said that LG is not required to work as per the aid and advice of the elected government in this regard. That is, Delhi government did not get relief from the Supreme Court. Delhi government had approached the Supreme Court against the decision of LG to nominate 10 councillors.
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has called the Supreme Court’s decision a big setback for democracy and the Constitution. Expressing his disagreement with the decision, he has said that the court’s decision is completely opposite to the hearing of the case. The MP said that Delhi should get these rights like other states.
