A Pakistani couple killed their daughter for refusing to marry them.
On Tuesday, the court found both the people guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. According to police officials, the girl wanted to live with her boyfriend while her parents wanted the daughter to marry her cousin.
At the behest of his father, the uncle has confessed to killing him. However, the father has been arrested from Pakistan this year, while the mother is still absconding.
The matter is of Italy. Saman Abbas, 18, lived with her family in Novellara, near Bologna. She mysteriously disappeared in May 2021.
Police investigation revealed that a year before her disappearance, she had refused to obey her family’s order to marry her cousin in Pakistan. The family members were adamant on marrying their daughter as per their wish, but the girl wanted to live with her lover.,
Uncle committed murder on the advice of parents
The court in Reggio Emilia, central Italy, ruled that the parents conspired to murder their daughter and that the uncle, at their instigation, killed the niece by strangulation.
The girl’s uncle has confessed to his crime. He is sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment. This case made a lot of headlines in central Italy. In this serious case of murder, the court has acquitted both the girl’s cousins due to lack of evidence.
Daughter wanted to live with her lover
In the year 2020, when Saman came to know that her family members wanted to marry her against her wishes, she left the house and started living somewhere else with the help of social workers.
But she went to meet her family in April 2021. She wanted to get her passport and start a new life with her boyfriend, which was rejected by her family.
She disappeared soon after. On the information of her lover, the police raided the girl’s house in May. However, during this time the girl’s parents had fled to Pakistan.
According to CCTV footage, the young woman was probably murdered on the night of April 30 to May 1, with five men leaving the house with shovels, wood and buckets and returning two and a half hours later. A year later, Sanam Abbas’s body was recovered from a nearby farmhouse. Post mortem confirmed murder by strangulation.
In August 2023, father Shabbar Abbas was arrested from Pakistan in the case. The uncle, Danish Hasnain, was handed over to French authorities, while the cousins were arrested in Spain. On the other hand, the girl’s mother Nazia Shaheen is still absconding.
