People in the United States of America (USA) started casting their votes on Tuesday.
They will select the next President for the country with their votes. Election results usually become clear immediately after voting ends.
However, this year’s election competition is tough so the final results may take a little longer to come.
The 2024 presidential election schedule begins Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. EST (11:00 p.m. GMT). Final voting ends on Wednesday at 1:00 am EST (6:00 am GMT).
When will the results come?
The first voting will end around 7 pm IST (5:30 am IST) in six states, including Georgia. Final voting will end at 12 midnight ET (10:30 am IST) in Alaska. Voting will end at 1pm ET (11:30pm IST). After this the counting of votes will start.
In past presidential elections the results often became clear on election night or early the next day. However, this time due to the tight results in many states, extra caution may have to be taken before declaring the winner.
Recent election surveys show almost equal support between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump.
Close results may necessitate recounts in some states. For example, Pennsylvania is an important swing state.
Here if the difference between the winner and the runner-up is less than half a percent, recounting will be required. The 2020 election had a narrow margin of 1.1 percent in Pennsylvania.
Republicans have already taken more than 100 legal actions challenging voter eligibility and voter roll management. Results may also be delayed due to any disruptions at polling stations.
Time of declaration of results in previous elections
The timing of declaration of election results has varied considerably. In 2020, Joe Biden was declared the winner as soon as the Pennsylvania results came out.
Earlier, Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election was announced just hours after the voting ended. Even during the time of Barack Obama, the results came quickly.
The 2000 election was an exception. The contest between George Bush and Al Gore lasted for five weeks. The US Supreme Court canceled the recount in Florida and declared George W Bush’s victory.
