Beijing. A Chinese company made its employee work for 104 days continuously, due to which the young man died. This incident happened in Zhushan city of Zhejiang province of China. The court has ordered the company to pay huge compensation on the complaint of the family.
Abao, a 30-year-old painter by profession, began working on a project in January. The project ran from February to May, and Abao had only one day off, on April 6. Due to the constant work pressure, Abao’s health deteriorated on May 25 and he was hospitalized. Doctors diagnosed a lung infection and said his respiratory system had stopped working. Despite treatment, Abao died. Abao’s family filed a case against the company in court over the incident. The family alleged that the company was responsible for his death because it put him under excessive work pressure. However, social security officers attributed Abao’s death to other illnesses, not work-related, and the company also refused to admit its fault.
After hearing the case, the court held the company 20 percent guilty and ordered it to pay compensation to the victim’s family. The court said that the company’s working hours were in violation of China’s labor law, under which working more than 8 hours a day and 44 hours a week is prohibited. Under this, the court ordered the company to pay compensation of 4 lakh yuan (about Rs 47.19 lakh), and also gave 10 thousand yuan for mental harassment.
