The Supreme Court had instructed the doctors to return to duty by 5 pm on Tuesday.
Now the doctors of West Bengal are going to march to the Health Ministry in Kolkata. The doctors have announced a protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor in RG Kar Hospital.
According to information, the doctors will march to the health ministry of West Bengal government to demand their demands.
Junior doctors have issued a memorandum and placed their demands before the government. The doctors demand that there should be separate restrooms and washrooms for them.
Apart from this, there should be security panels, CCTV, female security panel, and adequate security arrangements outside the operation theatre and wards.
The letter said, we want to tell you that security will not be ensured just by the presence of police and making separate rooms. Many other things also need to be done for the safety of medical personnel.
In a warning tone, the doctors said, we demand adequate health infrastructure in every district. We want to make it clear to the government that if the demands are accepted by 5 pm, only then can their request for strike be considered.
Otherwise we will believe that the government does not want to solve our problems. If any emergency situation arises in the state, the government will be responsible for it.
Let us tell you that during the hearing in the Supreme Court, a bench of CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra passed this order on August 9 after considering the investigation progress report and other aspects in the case of alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor of that college.
The bench warned the doctors of West Bengal, who have been on strike, dharna and protest for the last one month against the alleged rape and murder, that they should return to their respective duties by 5 pm tomorrow, otherwise the state government can initiate disciplinary action against them. The apex court said that the doctors’ protest cannot be at the cost of their duty.
The Chief Justice said, “We have given two days’ time. The young doctors should now return to their work. We know what is happening at the ground level. First return to work. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police will ensure security.
You have to return to work now. If you do not come to work, do not blame anyone for disciplinary action against you. You cannot say that senior doctors are working, so we will not work either.” Along with this warning, the bench also assured the striking doctors that if they report for duty on or before 5 pm on September 10, no disciplinary action will be taken against them.
During the hearing before the apex court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the West Bengal government, told the bench that there have been massive protests across the state.
He alleged that the protesters were indulging in violence. The protests were being held without taking prior permission from the state government. He also claimed before the bench that about 23 people had died due to the protests and six lakh people could not get treatment.
“23 people died because they (doctors) were not at work. The healthcare system could collapse,” he argued.
Six lakh people are not getting treatment. Resident doctors are not coming to the OPD and angiography of more than 1,500 patients is not being done.”
