Farmers are not getting DAP, crisis deepens due to Houthi rebels

New Delhi. Wheat and Rabi crops are being sown but the farmers of the country are facing shortage of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP). Every year, India requires about 90 to 100 lakh tonnes of DAP for both Kharif and Rabi crops, of which about 40 percent is met by domestic production.

Total requirement of DAP is around 93 lakh tonnes
The total requirement of DAP this year has been estimated at around 93 lakh tonnes, while the availability including domestic production and imports is only around 75 lakh tonnes. In this situation, farmers are worried because they need fertilizer on time.

There will be no shortage of fertilizers
The central government has told the farmers that there will be no shortage of fertilizers. For this, emphasis is also being laid on the use of liquid version of Nano DAP. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has said that India’s dependence is mainly on countries like Russia, Jordan and Israel and considering the current situation, the government is worried that imports may be affected.

The challenge is to provide timely fertilizers required for crops.
The ongoing conflict and political tensions in the Red Sea may adversely impact the availability of DAP. In such a situation, it has become a challenge to provide the necessary fertilizers for the crops to the farmers on time. The Center has assured to take steps to deal with this crisis, but farmers are more worried. Facing such challenges, the government needs to take quick and effective steps to improve the condition of farmers, so that food production is not affected.
