UN chief Antonio Guterres has lashed out at Israel over the horrific massacres that continue unabated in Gaza and the fading hopes of a ceasefire.
He said that he has made every possible effort to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza, but Benjamin Netanyahu is not ready to listen to him.
He expressed regret that this is the first time he has witnessed such horrific bloodshed and destruction. However, he expressed hope that he would support any ceasefire offer in Gaza.
Meanwhile, 40 innocent people have lost their lives in the latest attack by the Israeli army on Gaza. 60 others are injured in the attack. The attack took place in the area which the Israeli army had declared as a safe place for humanitarian settlement at the beginning of the war. Thousands of displaced people had taken shelter here.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an interview with The Associated Press that it is “unthinkable” to think that the United Nations can play a role in the future of Gaza. Or even administer the territory and provide peacekeeping forces, because Israel is not willing to accept the role of the United Nations. However, he also said, “The United Nations will always be ready to support any ceasefire.”
“Of course, we will be prepared to do whatever the international community asks of us for Gaza. But the question is whether Israel will accept it,” Guterres said.
It is noteworthy that due to Hamas attacks in southern Israel on 7 October, a terrible massacre has been going on in Gaza for the last 11 months.
The Israeli army is busy destroying Hamas’ hideouts. The UN is concerned that not only Hamas but also common people are being killed in Israeli attacks. So far more than 42 thousand Gazans have died in Israeli attacks.
40 Gazans killed in latest Israeli attack
Gaza’s civil defence agency said on Tuesday that 40 people were killed and 60 others wounded in an Israeli attack on a humanitarian zone in the south of the Palestinian territory, while the Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas command centre in the area.
The attack took place on al-Mawasi in Gaza’s main southern town of Khan Younis, which the Israeli military had designated as a safe place for humanitarian settlement at the start of the war.
Thousands of displaced people had taken refuge here. However, the Israeli army has occasionally carried out operations in and around this area. It was at this place that Hamas military chief Mohammad Deif was killed in an Israeli attack.
