Union Minister of State for Home V Muraleedharan, while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that at least 403 Indian students have died on foreign soil in the last five years.
He said that since 2018, 91 Indian students have died in Canada alone. The causes of death are different. There have been many deaths due to disaster and medical reasons also.
According to records, in one year, 48 Indian students have died in Canada, 40 in Russia, 36 in the US, 35 in Australia, 21 in Ukraine and 20 in Germany.
He said that the government gives priority to the safety of students studying abroad. He said that the Embassy also maintains contact with educational institutions abroad and Indian students studying there.
During any incident, they are immediately contacted and necessary assistance is provided. In case of crime, students are helped as per the administration and the law of the concerned country. Indian students get full assistance for emergency medical care or even accommodation.
Talking about the deaths of Indian students on foreign soil, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that now the number of students studying abroad has also increased rapidly. This is the reason why the number of deaths also appears higher now. The Union Minister said that senior Indian officials abroad also talk to students and their organizations. Apart from this he also visits educational institutions.
He said that the officers ensure that any criminal case is properly investigated and the culprit is punished. Let us tell you that according to the statistics, since 2018, 48 Indian students have died in the UK, 10 each in Italy and France.
