The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has completed one year.
Thousands died from both sides in this massacre. At least 44 thousand people were killed in Gaza. Most of the dead are women and children.
UNICEF chief expressed grave concern over the horrific massacre in Gaza. He warned that children there would face “intergenerational challenges” because of the conflict.
He said that if we look at Gaza from the eyes of a child, then no matter how much we help, it is a scene like hell for them. Whatever is happening there, the children are shocked.
“If you really look at Gaza from a child’s point of view, it’s a hellish scene,” UNICEF Executive Director Katherine Russell said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” program on Sunday. There is shortage of food and clean water.
Children are also losing hope.
“They are very traumatized by what is happening,” Russell said of the children. “Even though we are getting as much help out there as possible, the trauma that these children are facing is going to leave them with lifelong and even intergenerational challenges.”
In the fighting that began on October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters killed 1,200 Israeli civilians and took about 250 Israelis hostage. In response to this, the Israeli army has wreaked havoc in Gaza. Gaza city has become a cremation ground.
Thousands of dead bodies have been scattered. Lakhs of people have migrated. The official death toll has crossed 44 thousand. Despite so much bloodshed, the war has not stopped. Fighting continues in Gaza from the Israeli army.
Russell said it was “very dangerous” to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, he termed providing polio doses to thousands of children in the area as a big success.
On Israel’s latest military operations targeting Iran-backed group Hezbollah in Lebanon, the UNICEF chief said, “The speed of the attack is shocking. It is challenging for us to reach the approximately 1 million displaced people there”.
