The war that has been going on in Gaza for nearly 11 months will be stopped for a few hours for three days from today.
A temporary agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas for children. Under this, polio drops will be administered to children up to 10 years of age in the entire Gaza and during this period there will be no war between Israel and Hamas within Gaza.
All this is happening after a 10-month-old child was paralyzed recently. This is the first case of polio in Gaza in the last 25 years.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that Israel has agreed to a three-day ceasefire to allow the vaccination of children in Gaza to protect them against polio.
Rick Pepperkorn, a senior official of the organization, said that the aim of this campaign is to vaccinate about 640000 children in the Gaza Strip and this special campaign will start on Sunday.
It will be launched in three different phases. The first in the central part of the belt, the second in the southern and the third in the northern parts.
During each phase, fighting would pause for three consecutive days between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time.
Polio in Gaza after 25 years
Gaza reported its first case of polio in nearly 25 years. In early August, a 10-month-old child was diagnosed with polio.
One of his legs was paralyzed. Six of the seven tests he did at a Gaza hospital confirmed polio. The death toll in Gaza from Israeli attacks has risen to more than 40,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
At the same time, the number of people who died from the disease is not clear. Hospitals are struggling with basic facilities and there has been an unexpected increase in cases of infection among children.
Polio campaign for three days from today
A campaign to vaccinate children in Gaza against polio and prevent the spread of the virus began on Saturday, Gaza’s health ministry said.
The ministry said vaccinations of children have begun in Gaza. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that a major campaign will begin on Sunday.
“There must be a ceasefire so the team can reach all the people targeted in this operation,” said Deputy Health Minister Dr. Youssef Abu al-Rish.
Agreement on ceasefire for at least 9 hours
Israel has agreed to halt military operations in Gaza for three days starting Sunday to allow health workers to vaccinate about 650,000 Palestinian children.
Officials said the halt would last for at least nine hours. However, it has nothing to do with the ceasefire talks underway.
“We will vaccinate children up to the age of 10,” said Dr. Bassam Abu Ahmed, secretary general of public health programs at Al-Quds University.
The vaccination drive began this month after Gaza reported its first polio case in 25 years.
Hours before the operation, the Gaza Health Ministry said it had received 89 bodies in hospitals on Saturday. The ministry said 26 of them were killed in Israeli bombing.
