Amidst the long-running tension in the Middle East, a good news has come on Monday towards ending the war.
According to Lebanese officials, Lebanon and Hezbollah have agreed to the terms of a ceasefire with Israel.
A Lebanese official told Reuters on Monday that Hezbollah had agreed to all the US proposals.
Ali Hassan Khalil, an aide to Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, said Lebanon had given its written response to the US ambassador on Monday and US official Amos Hochstein was heading to Beirut to continue talks. This effort is being described as the most important effort so far to end this conflict.
However, there has been no comment from Israel on this matter yet. Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, has backed its old ally Nabih Berri to negotiate a ceasefire.
“Lebanon presented its response in a positive environment,” Khalil said, declining to provide details. He further said, “Whatever response we have given confirms all the provisions of UN Resolution 1701.”
Earlier in 2006, there was a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
According to its terms, Hezbollah would have to withdraw its troops from the area between the Lebanon-Israel border and the Litani River.
Lebanese officials have said that the success of the initiative now depends on Israel. He said that if Israel does not want a solution then Hezbollah can also create 100 problems.
Israel has long claimed that Resolution 1701 was never properly implemented.
Israel has emphasized the presence of Hezbollah fighters and weapons on the border. At the same time, Lebanon has accused Israel of several violations including flying fighter planes in its airspace.
