Heavy rains and floods wreak havoc in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, 10 people dead so far, trains and schools closed, alert issued

Continuous torrential rains in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have killed 10 people and caused waterlogging in many areas. Road and rail traffic was disrupted on Sunday due to waterlogging.

Due to heavy rains and waterlogging on tracks at many places, 99 trains were cancelled and four trains were partially cancelled, while 54 trains were diverted, a South Central Railway (SCR) official said. Rivers are in spate in both the states and national and state disaster response forces have evacuated thousands of people from flood-hit areas and shifted them to relief camps.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and assured them of all possible help from the Central Government to deal with the rains and floods.

Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that timely precautionary measures have reduced loss of life and property. He said that despite these measures, nine people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents in different parts of the state. Three people are also feared to have been swept away in Mahabubabad and Khammam districts.
