Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has given the reason for the reduction in the seats of Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
He accused the opposition parties of confusing voters regarding this. During a recent program, he specifically mentioned farmers and backward classes.
In the elections held in June, the BJP failed to secure a majority on its own and could win only 240 seats. Whereas, in 2019 the party had got 303 seats
In the Indian Express program, Gadkari was asked, ‘So why did the Bharatiya Janata Party suffer a setback in the Lok Sabha elections in terms of the number of seats?’ To this he replied, ‘This election was about convincing or confusing people. First, the opposition had launched a whispering campaign to confuse the voters. They said that the BJP is against the Constitution of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and will change the Constitution.’
Gadkari said, ‘Their leaders created fear especially among the backward classes that the benefits being given to them will no longer continue. Secondly, the measures taken by us to benefit the farmers were portrayed against them.’
The Union Minister said, ‘I think the Lok Sabha elections were a victory for India. The BJP has returned to power and I am 100 per cent confident that we will get a good majority in the upcoming elections in four states. People have again shown faith in the BJP that it is capable, its record is good and it can change the future of this country. You can compare 60 years of Congress and 15 years of BJP in terms of performance. You will get the answer.’
Made a big claim about the post of Prime Minister
According to PTI, Gadkari said on Saturday that once a leader had offered to support him if he joined the race for the post of Prime Minister but he had turned down the offer saying he had no such desire.
Speaking at a journalism award function here, Gadkari said, “I remember an incident – I will not name anyone… the person said if you are going to become the Prime Minister, we will support you.” However, he did not say when this incident took place.
The senior BJP leader said, ‘But, I asked why should you support me and why should I take your support? Becoming the Prime Minister is not the aim of my life. I am loyal to my beliefs and my organisation and I will not compromise for any post because my determination is most important for me.’
In his speech, Gadkari stressed the importance of ethics in both journalism and politics.
