The Indian Medical Association has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene to stop violence against doctors and other healthcare workers by bringing in a law and declaring the workplace as a safe zone under the Essential Services Rights.
IAM has written this letter in connection with the vandalism that took place during the ongoing protests following the inhumane incident with a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital.
Through this letter, IMA also placed its 5 demands in front of PM Modi. Along with this, IMA had called for keeping non-emergency services closed across the country.
Following this, the IMA issued a statement saying that all emergency services are being continued and staff have been deployed in these emergency wards.
Demand to bring central law for protection of doctors from PM
IMA said that the victim used to work in 36-hour shifts. There is neither a safe place to rest nor adequate toilet facilities.
These shortcomings require extensive changes in the working and living conditions of resident doctors. The IMA has demanded that hospitals be declared safe zones, the first step in which should be the right to mandatory security.
Security protocols in hospitals should be similar to airports. Declaring mandatory security jurisdiction is the first step. CCTV cameras, deployment of security personnel and protocols can be followed.
The IMA also demanded a central law for the protection of doctors, careful and professional investigation of the crime and delivery of justice within a stipulated time frame, identification of those involved in the brutality and stringent punishment for those involved.
The IMA said the RG Kar incident has brought to the fore two dimensions of hospital violence, crime on a barbaric scale due to lack of safe spaces for women and hooliganism on a barbaric scale due to lack of organised security protocols. The crime and barbarity have shocked the conscience of the nation.
Appreciation of PM’s remarks on Independence Day
IMA also appreciated the Prime Minister’s comments about the safety of women in his Independence Day address. IMA said that we appeal to you to intervene at this time.
This will give confidence not only to women doctors but also to every woman working at the workplace. According to IMA, 60 percent of Indian doctors are women, while about 85 percent of women are in the field of nursing, so all of them should get a peaceful environment, security and protection at the workplace.
