Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said the biggest test of democracy is how well a ruler tolerates even the strongest opinion expressed against him.
He introspects on this. The senior leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre was speaking at a book release function at the MIT World Peace University here.
He also asked writers and intellectuals to fearlessly express their views. Gadkari said that what is happening in politics these days has happened elsewhere too.
Someone has lost their identity. Differences of opinion is not a problem in our country, our problem is not having any opinion. The Union Minister said that we are neither right wing nor left wing, we are opportunists.
Nitin Gadkari said that litterateurs, intellectuals and poets are expected to express their views openly and strongly.
If there is any biggest test of democracy then it is that if any idea is against the king then the king should tolerate it and introspect on it. This is the real democracy.
Earlier on Sunday, on Engineers Day, Gadkari was present at a function at the College of Engineering Pune. Here he emphasized on transparency and setting time limits for taking decisions. He said that if a knowledgeable person does not understand the spirit behind the law, then what is the use of it?
The Union Minister said that there is a lot of difference between the written letter and the spirit behind it. A knowledgeable person should understand the spirit behind the law. Sometimes the situation is such that even if potholes on the roads need to be filled, the boss’s order is required.
He said that I do not want to say much about them right now, but as soon as the money is in hand, the work begins.
Gadkari said that we have ‘Newton’s father’. The more weight you put on the file, the faster it moves. He then stressed on the need for transparency and timely decision-making process.
It is worth noting that last week Nitin Gadkari had made a big disclosure. He said that a leader had offered him the post of Prime Minister, which he had rejected. Gadkari said that becoming the Prime Minister was not the aim of his life.
Addressing the media at the Late Anil Kumar Journalism Award ceremony organised by Vidarbha Gaurav Pratishthan on Saturday, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said that he is determined and at the same time loyal to the organisation and will not compromise with it.
He said that I do not want to take anyone’s name, but one person told me that if you are going to become the Prime Minister then we will support you. I said, why should you support me and why should I take your support. Becoming the Prime Minister is not the aim of my life.
I am not going to compromise for any post because my belief is most important to me. This is the biggest strength of Indian democracy.
